I didn't bother to sketch it out before I started painting. I was in too much of a hurry to be a perfectionist.
Look at what that did to me. X'D
It's lousy, I know. Horrendous, even. I've got no excuses. I just know that I want to go back and fix the proportions as soon as I possibly can. And when I'm done, I'll probably never attempt an acrylic painting ever again on canvas because it's extremely difficult and very-nearly impossible. >.>
The reference was lost somewhere on the interwebs. That's okay, though. This doesn't look anything like it. XD The top arm is the only thing that I got right. Everything else is like LOLWUTIDON'TKNOWWHAT'SGOINGON
I think this is fantastic! You really are too hard on yourself. I'm glad you didn't sketch it before painting. In fact, that's a very good creative exercise that you should do more often. It's like sketching--it seems fairly pointless, but it really does make for good practice and better results after. Plus, the piece has a very raw feeling to it--and I think it's because you were free painting.
It's so expressive. The shading is so intense. I can never get the hang of using odd colors for shading. At least, not like you do.
In the long run, I'd hang this on my wall. Some day I'll have money to invest in other people's art, and when that happens, I'd like to consider at least getting some kind of print. That is, if the offer's there when the time comes.
Aww... Aw! Why, thanks! This is a comment that I very much did not expect to receive. Thank you so much! I'm all warm and fuzzy inside, now. >w<
You've got an excellent point. I'd never thought of free-painting like sketching... but it makes sense that it's another method that can be used to improve. I'll keep that in mind next time I dive headlong into a painting! XD
When I manage to finish this painting (and even if I don't), I'd love to send you a print if you're still interested. :3 I'm really pleased that you like it so much!
Aw, thanks! I'm genuinely surprised at how much people like this. I guess I'm too much of a critic toward my experimental paintings... X'D
Those thick, dark shadows might be my signature style. Looking back on my stuff (most of which hasn't been posted here), there's always a lot of contrast between the lights and darks, even in my pencil drawings. :3
I don't think this looks derpy, you should see my failed attempts with acrylic paints! Haha, I knew right away that this was one of your paintings when I was looking through my deviantwatch stacks! The shading is excellent on here and I like what you did with the background! As for a title...hmm, I the only think I can think of is "Muscle Man" or "In the Ring" (for some reason when I look at that background, he looks like he's in a wrestling ring, the red line is the wrestling ring and the blue is the faded audience.)
Maybe the title will come to me when I finish it. XD You're right, though--that red stripe vaguely looks like a wrestling ring... or a boxing ring. I don't think the portfolio judges will pick up on that if I mention it in the title, unfortunately. XD
It's nice to know that I have a recognizable style! For a few years, I was really worried that all of my stuff looked like it belonged to somebody else.
Yeah I'm pretty good at coming up with titles after I finish the artwork! Yeah, it's probably a good idea to come up with your own title, I'm probably the only person that thinks the background looks like a boxing ring!
Of course you got a recognizable style! Yeah, I'm also worried that my style isn't very original. It just seems like another anime-like style or surrealist style when it comes to my paintings.

Keep up the good work!
